INSTRUCTIONS Cutting Transfer the patterns for the backer board, the bear, the deer, both wolves, and tree No. 10 onto the 1/8" Baltic birch plywood and cut to shape. Transfer the patterns for the remaining pieces onto the 1/16" Baltic birch plywood and cut to shape. Saw around the perimeter of each piece as indicated on the patterns. I bore a 1/16" hole at each starting point and saw completely around the piece in the indicated direction. Note: saw on the outside of the lines (especially for the claws and teeth); that way they will stay full size. Use No. 2/0 blades for the 1/16" pieces and No. 2/0 or No. 2 blades for the 1/8" pieces. A sharp blade is a must, as well as a zero clearance table top, Proper tension makes cutting more precise and easier. After cutting out the bear and wolves, you can go back, if you choose, and cut hair lines into the edges with a No. 2/0 blade. Lightly sand all pieces. On the top surface of each, sand up to 220 grit for a smooth coloring surface. With graphite paper and the stylus, transfer the interior painting details to the pieces. The hair lines and other details will help you as you color the cutouts. Making the frame Cut the 5/8" Baltic birch and 1/4" hardwood plywood to 24" x 15" with the grain running up and down. Stack and glue both pieces together with the hardwood piece on top. Measure and mark a 20" x 11" opening centered on the hardwood plywood. Bore a 3/32" blade entry hole in each corner for the No. 7 blade and cut continued on page 18 16 ® Creative Woodworks & Crafts |
