Creative Woodworks & crafts 2001-10, страница 10jfljgk From the Editor ys Desk-- JES Art and Craft \ ) 1" 1993, 1 had the honor of meeting Sam Maloof at a place called Peler's Valley in northern New Jersey, where he presented a wcek-end seminar on building rocking chairs. The class began with a slide presentation showcasing many one-ol-a-kind furniture pieces Sam had created, along with commentary from the artist himself. There was also a hands-on demonstration in which he shaped the various components of one of his trademark rocking chairs. Sam was ail engaging and gracious instructor. I lis interaction with those attending the class was direct and personal. We did not simply learn mechanical technique. There was also considerable discussion of the philosophy of craft and indeed of life in general. For me, the experience was seminal. Maloof's work blurs the imaginary line (hat separates art from craft. As boih an artist and a craftsman, 1 came away from the experience with an entirely new perspective. That is what really good art does. It allows you to perceive the world in a way you may not have thought of before. When Emily Winctz, a representative of the Ken wick Gallery, contacted me about publicizing a retrospective of Sam Maloof's work, I readily agreed to include its mention in this issue (page 58). If you happen to be in Washington, DC between September 14,2001 and January 20,. 2002,1 would urge you to go to the Smithsonian American Art Museum Renwick. Gallery and sec Sam's work. Now, I know that, furniture making is a somewhat different pursuit than scrolling, but there are many common bonds, not the least of which are craftsmanship and love for the material. There is also that blurred line between art and craft. Designers such as Dirk Boelman, Marilyn Carmin, or Dan and Raymond Wilekens (to name just a few of many) are each doing work which can be considered much more art than craft. For example, some of the patterns currently being developed by Dirk, Editorial Director Robert Bcckcr, and Wcs Demarest (such as ''Light of the World") arc absolutely beautiful pieces of art. Even my collaboration with Dirk and Wcs {Siesta, page 18 of this issue and on the cover), with Wes's innovation of sculptural scrolling, pushes the envelope of the medium. All this loads lo one inevitable conclusion. Scrollers are not lesser artists because of their choscn medium. In fact, it would not suiprise me if, in some future time, a major museum or gallery mounted a retrospective of their work. Looking forward to that time. Creative Woodworks & Crafts will continue to bring you designs which are on (he cutting edge of the craft. Until nexl time, all (he best and happy woodcrafling!
