SUPPLIES

Wood: Osoge orange—two pieces 5/16" x 14^v x 14" (for the sun); mahogany— one piece 1 /8" x 14" x 14" (for the sun); purple heart—one piece 1/8" x4-1/2" x 8-1/2" (for the fighting knights overlay and the clock numbers); Baltic birch plywood—one piece 1/8" x 4-1/2^:' x 6-1/2" (for the fighting knight overlay backer) Tools: scroll saw with assorted blades, including No. 2/0; drill press with bits, including Nos. 72, 60 and 3-l/8"-Dia. movement, transfer the pattern to the stock with sprct$< adhesive. Align the pattern so that the vertical line througf| the 12 and 6 is about 45 degrees to the grain of the toffi piece. Hint: remember to center the pattern on the wood| The points of the sun rays will extend farther on the bolfonl than they do on the pattern on top. This is why the extra; stock width around the pattern is needed

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 2. Set up your saw by tilting the scroll saw table to 15 degrees. Nofe: if you are cuffing with the line on.the right side of the blade, tilt the right side of your table up. If you cut with the line to the left ■side of the blade, tilt the left side of your table up.

Step 1. Start by preparing the stock for the sun. Edge-glue, sufficient stock to make two 5/16" thick pieces-of Osage orange and one 1/8" thick piece of mahogany measuring 14' x 14". Laminate the mahogany between the two Osage orange pieces with its grain running perpendicular to that of the other stock. This adds a nice accent, as'well as a little strength to the finished piece. Plane the giued-up piece so that the final dimensions are 3/4" thick which is plenty for the 5/8" deep cavity which will receive the clock
