Using a Forstner bit, hog out the 5/8" deep cavity for the finished piece will be larger than the top. To start cut- the clock mechanism. ting, come in from the edge towards a point, as if the line ["'"""' 11 ■ ■w^^jMr—i continued out to the edge. Continue around the side of | \ ■S^H^^k I the next ray and off to the edge as if that line extended to ' \ ^Bp'^J^K* ^ theedge. \ : % 1 Step 7. Make the fighting knights overlay. Use two contrasting woods for this piece. Here the knights are cut from pur-pje heart and the backer is Baltic birch plywood, both pieces are 1/8" thick. The numbers for the clock were also cut from 1 /8" purple heart. Transfer the fighting knights pattern to the purple heart and make all inside cuts. Sand the back and glue the purple heart to the Baltic birch and saw around the perimeter. A 2/0 blade was used and blade entry holes were drilled with a No. 72 and a No. 60 bit. Remove the pattern and sand as necessary. Step 4. When you cut into each successive point, be mindful that you will start cutting the bottom that extends out before you get to the point on the pattern. It would be a very good idea to practice this, as well as the turn between the rays, on a piece of scrap wood to get the feel for it. Step 5. The cavity which will receive the clock movement is 5/8''-deep x 3-l/8"-Dia. If you have a 3-l/8"-Dia Forstner bit, drill 16" hole on the center mark of the pattern for the clot^stem, turn the piece over and bore the cavity using the'T/16" hole to locate Ihe center on the rear side. After the cavity is bored, drill the center hole with a 3/8" bit for the stem hole. If you do not have a large Forstner bit, drill the center hole of the pattern with a 3/8" bit, mark the circle on the rear of the sun by using a piece of scrap wood, a mechanical pencil, and the 3/8" drill bit as a beam compass. Drill a 3/8"-Dia. hole in one end and a smaller hole which will let the point of the pencil through 1-5/8" away on the other. Use the 3/8" drill bit, inserted in the shaft hole, as the center point and mark the location of the cavity on the back of the sun. This will result in a circle with a diameter of 3-1 /4", giving you a bit of leeway. Fighting knights overlay Glue the numbers in place on the sun Glue the overlay centered on the sun Step 8. Glue the fighting knights overlay in place on the sun. Finish as desired. Following the manufacturer's instructions, install the clock movement. Hang and enjoy! Creative Woodworks S.
