INSTRUCTIONS

Trace the side view pattern onto the wood block and saw out the profile on the band saw. Note: the front view is not sawn out. Drill a hole in the base to accommodate the carver's screw. To hold the carving in place, I used a notched 2" x 2" held in the vise of my carving bench. I carve much of the piece with it lying down on the bench. If you don't have a vice on your bench, use a clamp to hold the notched 2" x 2" in place. It is important to have the carving secure so that you can control the tools with both hands. Draw a center line across the front, top, and back of the carving. This center line will aid you in matching the right side to the left.

Step 2. With the No. 41-14mm V tool (or the parting tool you have available), make a stop cut around the back of the ear and along the hairline at the back and the beard line at the front. Lower the wood of the neck 5/8".

Step 3. Carve the face across the nose to a 90 degree angle. Put a square across the nose to make sure it is angled properly. Draw brackets at the bridge of the nose to indicate where the stop cuts will be made for the eye masses. Also draw two brackets to indicate the wings of the nose. WiththeNo.il-16mm gouge, make stop cuts at the eye brackets. Angle the stop cuts away from the nose. With the same tool, make cuts along the sides of the nose from the wings of the nose to the eye stop cuts.

I Step 4. With the No. 3-| 14mm gouge, round the " eye masses into the cheeks. Use the No. 7-12mm gouge to make stop cuts at the wings of the nose. Use the same tool to remove wood at the cheeks to lower the Swings of the nose back I onto the face.
