From the editor's desk

Welcome to this issue of Creative Woodworks & Crafts. We've yol a fine selection of projects and feature articles (or you; in fact, choosing the front-cover project was particu Icily difficult this time because there were so many viable candidates.

Many cf you rruy already know of the recent passing away of Pet Spiclman. Pat made enormous contributions to the overall popularity of scroll sawing, most nolobly through his pattern books, but also through his newslei let, I -is involvement with SAW (Scroll Saw Association of the World), and his personal presence at various woodworking shows. Our Contributing Editcr Den wilckens has been compiling heartfelt testimonials from members of our extended "scroll saw family," and these will be presented in our next issue (on sale April 5th, 2C05). In the meantime, we extend our condolences to Hie Spiclman family, along with our sincere admiration for Patrick Spielman's considerable accomplishments.

One of our feature articles in this issue is aboul Jim Reidle, founder of Wildwood Designs. Jim co-authored several successful book; with Pat Spielmcn and also developed many enduring and popular scroll sew projects over the yecrs. It is interesting to learn lhat woodworking is literally in Jim's fclood-his father, Wencil, was a gifted woodworker whose scale model farm machinery is both remarkable cr.d inspiring. Our Jim Reidle feclure ties in well with cur coverage of Rick Hutcheson's antique scroll saw collection, because Wencil Reidle did some of his finest work on nn old fcct-powered Rogers scroll saw.

In the project department, John Polhernus. also known as 'The Little Engineer." has devised an ingenious technique for making custom-fitted pen and pencil boxes. These boxes look greet, and using John's technique causes writing implements to fit inside tl lerr with a precision that will delight you.

Ihree notable projects in this issue are by designers who ate brand new to Creative Woodworks & Crafts. Jeff Zaffino's "Family Time" is a great, albeit time consuming, project that is sure to be made by quite c few of you. Thank you, Tom Mullcne, for alerting me to Jeffs design prowess. Incredibly, Jeff has been scrolling tor less than two years and currently der'ves his compleie livelihood from it! Look tor Jeff's contributions in many more future issues of Creci/ive Woodworks and Crafts. Our second new designer, Gary MacKay. brings f lis handsome "Quilt Top Box" to 1kiis issue, with its wooden hinge and carefully inlaid lid, Tf is project is sure fo make its mark in our back issue archives for years to come. Last but not lecst, meet Orchid Davis, an extremely talented woodburning artist, and I do not use the term artist lightly. Orchid tecches us how to woodburn a magnificent bobcat that she designed based upon Wes Derrarest's photc of an actual bobcat in the wild, a photo thai took him years to cbtain. We'll shew you Wes' original photc, Orchid's rendition of it, and the techniques used by Orchid lo make it all come to lite. Starting with the issue after the next one, on sale June 7th, 2005, look for Crchid to do a series of weedbumed wildlife projects 1hat will span a minimum of three issues. If you already do wcodburning or heve even a mild interest in it, this is your chance to learn from one of the best.

Tl rat's it for new. Enjoy this issue and until the next one, all the best!

Sincerely,

/UJ-A

Corrections: In our January. 900S issue we forgot to include the stain chart for the Pintail Duck in tarsia project. To obtcin the chart, either email us at editors®wcodworksandcrcfts.com or write to Creative Woodworks & Crafts, 7 Woterloo Rd., Stanhope. NJ 07874. Also, regarding the same project, a few of you noted that the Pintail Di.ck shown varied sorrewhal from the pattern. We forgot te explain that we had to size the pattern down to fit our magazine's lormat. and the designer (Kathy Meyer) made a lev/ pattern changes to accomplish that. We cpologize for those errors.
