Introduction

Although this swivel-top box looks dclicole and airy, it is amazingly sturdy and functional as well. It can be used as a holder for potpourri or spare change, a jewelry cr trinket box, or even a decoralive container for chocolates or mints. The possibilities are endless! This would make a wonderful Mother's Day gift. You can stcck cut the lid of Ihe box, which is the most time-consuming part of the proccss. and make several boxes lo give away or sell. We hope you enjoy making this projcct as much as we enjoyed creating it!

INSTRUCTIONS

Make photocopies of the original paltems and keep them for future reference.

Preparing and cutting the lid

Lightly sand Ihe surface of wood to be used for the lid and carefully remove all the dust and debris. This will help to minimize the amount of sanding you may need to dc after the lid design is cut. Although the design appears to be quile delicate, it is actually quite strong and will stand up to sanding with an orbital sander when completed. I lowever. it is always easier to have Ihe surface as smooth as possible before you begin cutting.

Cul out the lid pattern piece and spray the bcck with a light coat of adhesive, allowing it to tack up slightly until it feels like the back of masking lape.

Apply the lid pattern tc the wood and press down firmly. Note: You may wish to cut mere than one lid at a time cs this is the nest time-consuming pert of the project. To do so, simply place another piece of 1/4"-thick maple under the first piece at this point, attaching them using ploin paper and temporary-bend spray adhesive.

Apply a layer of clear packcging tape over the entire surface of the pattern, laying adjacent strips as needed to cover the area. This helps prevent burning the wood when culling il out cn the scroll saw, and I highly recommend it when cutting mosl hard wcods.

Using the scroll saw with the No. 2 reverse tooth blade, cut the lid design. Note: If you are preparing multiple lids, separate them after scrolling the design. Fach box must be finished individually at this pcint, after the lid, bottom, ard sides ore cut together tc ensure a pertect fit.

Drill entry holes in the waste areas of the design using the drill with the 1/16" drill bil. Place a piece of scrap wood undemecth to help prevent tear-oul in the back. The center hole and the ten holes of the flower are exactly 1/16" in dicmeter, so be sure to center the drill bit end save yourself some cutting time!

Even with the use of the scrap wcod undernecth the lid piece some tear-out may occur. Before ycu proceed to the scroti saw, lightly sand the back of the lid In the direction of Ihe wood grain to ensure that the lid will sit flat cn your scroll saw table and will not "catch" as you are sawing.
