'litis is not a complete iisi of the rod oak group, us it contains several hundred species including hybrids, but these arc the primary commercial lumber species. The red oaks differ from the white oaks in several ways: their leaves tire pointed with bristles or iheir lips, rather than lobbed with 110 bristles; their acorns are bitter, rather than sweet; and their acorns take two seasons lo mature, rather than one. As with every rule, there are some minor exceptions. Rc<l oak is the dominant commercial hardwood, and even though interior decorating .styles change, the market demand for tlijs species does not. I Iowever, when you buy red oak, several of these species may be mixed into a shipment. While there an: slight, dif jfcrences in their color and grain configuration, these differences exist even with a single spccics of tree taken from different areas. 48 • Creative Wi:iiiV«fe E Cr-dfLs June 2C0Q |
