John Polhemus, "The Little Engineer"

Hi, folks, and welcome to our second Holiday Edition of Creative Woodworks & Crafts I It was fun putting this issue together and we sure hope you enjoy it. Speaking of fun, check out John Polhemus' two Goofy Gag Gifts on page 18. T have a feeling these will become scroll saw "classics," because people love projects that make them laugh. Over the years, I've seen guys at many woodworking shows demonstrating scroll saws by making those tiny 3-D reindeer (often without a pattern and usually very fast), but leave it to John. "The Little Engineer," to take those reindeer, turn their heads in alternate directions (just like sawteeth), and create "buck saws!" It may be corny, but it sure is funny, and that's why the Buck Saw- and Table Saw should both lie around for years.

In addition to a wide array of holiday-themed scroll saw projects, we also have two fine intarsia designs, 100-plus ornament patterns, and a kaleidoscope mini-lathe project for you to choose from. B.J. Holm has even included a recipe for gingerbread cookies to complement her Gingerbread Cookie Ornaments! As always, special thanks to our talented designers; it is their collective effort to strive for beauty and originality that keeps the creativity in Creative Woodworks & Crafts.

Finally, no Holiday Issue would be complete without something or someone to inspire us, and Dave Johnson (from the U.K.) provides a generous helping of inspiration in his Reader's Gallery profile on page 60. Placed "in a home" at age four when his mother died, Dave subsequently discovered fretwork (that's what they call it in the U.K.) and enjoyed it greatly. Gradually, however, he got away from his hobby only to rediscover it as an adult around the same lime that he w as diagnosed with MS, which left him confined to a wheelchair. Since reconnecting with his passion lor fretwork, Dave has made countless high-quality projects, but perhaps more importantly, he has also found, through his absorption in woodworking, a greater ability to cope with his illness. The next time I'm tempted to feel sorry for myself I hope 1 will remember Dave Johnson's strength and courage.

We wish every one of you health, happiness, prosperity, and a great Holiday Season ahead!

Sincerely,

B.J. Holm

Dave Johnson
