First let's look at how easy the

Work Sharp system is to use.

I've always fought against keeping the correct angle on the tool's edge while sharpening, and never enjoyed the time required to push and pull a plane iron or chisel across a stone - any stone. A sharpening machine with a blade holder seemed the best answer, but adjusting the holding jig and dealing with the heat and mess of a wet-grinding sharpening machine still made the sharpening process too long and still too complicated.

The Work Sharp product line includes two machines and their accessories. The machines are the WS3000 shown in the pictures here (around $200), which offers four pre-set blade angles (20°, 25°, 30° or 35°) and operating at 580 rpm. The other machine is the WS2000, which is a more basic machine (around $100) and offers a set 25° angle for sharpening and a faster (1,750 rpm) wheel speed.

Both machines respond to my issues with sharpening. They have built-in blade guides that quickly (and I mean two-seconds quickly) adjust to fit the width of your plane iron or chisel. The WS2000 will hold blades up to 15/8" wide, and the WS3000 accommodates blades up to 2" wide. A lever to the right of the port allows adjustment for the blade skew to guarantee a square edge on your chisel or plane blade.

Focusing on the WS3000 model, sharpening is accomplished with four grits (more are available) of self-adhesive discs that are adhered to two 150mm tempered-glass wheels. The wheels can be used either side up in the machine, which allows four progressive sharpening grits without having to change the adhesive discs.

The guide holds the blade loosely to allow a plunge-and-pull motion that touches the bevel edge of the blade against the underside of the spinning glass wheel. Here's where the guide gets even better. The resting surface of the guide has a micro-abrasive sheet that removes the burr created during sharpening, as the tool is withdrawn!

Sharpening creates heat that can damage the temper of the iron or chisel. Wet sharpening systems use the liq-

The blade angle on the WS3000 is adjusted by lifting the lever and moving the guide up or down. The window on the side shows the angle. The WS3000 offers four different sharpening angles, 20°, 25°, 30° and 35° for different blade requirements.
