beginner myself, I can remember my own frustration. I was using the method you describe in Fig. 3 and I had a blade with some wobbie (are there any that are perfect?) Sometimes I would set the miter gauge, make a test cut and find that the angle was off. I would loosen the miter gauge, go through the same procedure, make another test cut and the angle would be off again but by a different amount. On the other hand sometimes the angle on the test piece would be correct. 1 hadn't changed my setting method.

The accuracy of the setting, I found {after tearing my hair out), would depend on the position of the blade when it stopped. You'll realize, after a few moments thought, that a blade with a simple wobble has two positions, iSO degrees apart, where the blade may be parallel to the groove. Otherwise it will be off any of a range of angles.

So what is the alternative? It is to make all alignments for simple miters by setting the desired angle between the gauge and the miter groove. As a matter of fact, this is the only correct way to do it because the groove is the only thing that controls the path traveled by the piece being cut. I use an extension on the miter gauge (same as Fig. 5 on page 21, March/April 1983) and a carpenter's square to set the gauge for 90 degree cuts and a 45 degree combined with a 60-30 triangle to set for the 45 degree miter.

Odds and Ends

A summer workshop titled "Equipment Maintenance and Repair'' will be offered by the School of Technology at Bowling Green State University in conjunction with Rockwell International and Ornamental Products Tool & Supply Company. The six-day workshop, which may be taken for 2 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit or for non-credit, is scheduled for June 13-18, 1983. Meeting hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:20 p.m. daily.

The purpose of the workshop is to familiarize the participants with setting-up, adjusting, maintaining, repairing and overhauling common woodworking and metalworking machinery. Demonstrations by field service staff and "hands-on" activities will
