Shop Tips

A 2 in. square by 36 in. long cleat glued to a piece of '/j in. by 30 in. by 36 in. plywood makes a handy work-surface that can be easily clamped to my Black and Decker Workmate. Jerry J. Ryan, Grand Rapids, Minn.

Here is how I quickly and accurately enlarge the 1 in. grid pattern often given in magazines. Count the squares needed in each direction on a piece of Vt in. pegboard and place a piece of paper underneath. Then draw little circles in the holes around the edge of the area needed. Take a steel rule and fill in the grid lines and you have ready-made 1 in. graph paper.

For clamping a board to a workbench, nothing beats the ease and simplicity of an ancient tool called a holdfast. This one can be made of standard plumber's fittings for about $4.00.

The diameter of the holdfast should be slightly smaller than the hole bored in the workbench. So-called 3/8 in. galvanized (or black) pipe has an outside diameter of 11/16 in. which is ideal for the typical V* in. bench hole.

In use, the holdfast is struck downward to clamp and struck forward to release. Use scrap wood under the holding end to avoid marring the work-piece.

When a screw is under strain it often loosens up in its hole. Replacing it with a larger or longer screw will sometimes provide a temporary solution, but here's a method that's permanent. Drill out the old screw hole with a Vt in. drill, then use a Vt in. plug cutter to cut a plug from the same type of wood. After gluing the plug in the hole you'll be able to drive in the old screw again.

Keep a supply of colored chalk in your shop to mark the reference face, edge, and end of your stock. The chalk will come off with light sanding and is bold enough that part identification is easily done. You can also mark each part with a different color for assembly.
