Ends of boards tend to dry faster than their middles. Resulting shrinkage may then cause the glue joint to open slightly at the ends of the boards. The way to compensate for this is to plane a very slight hollow in the center of the two boards after the edges have been jointed. When pressed together before gluing and clamping, a thin thread of light should show through as shown in Fig. 7.

face up. Board number two is dressed with the face side down, then if the other edge needs jointing, it is turned over so the numbered face is up.

If the plane body or iron are out of square, this method insures that the error will be matched with a corresponding error on the mating board. The jointing process is repeated with as many boards as necessary to achieve the desired width slab.
