Special Techniques

The Finger joint Spline

Occasionally we discover a special technique that is both unusual, useful and to the best of our knowledge, not widely known. The finger-joint spline, which is featured in the contemporary chest of drawers that begins on page 55, is exactly such a technique.

In carcase construction, when the method of joinery is not intended for display, the specific types of joinery traditionally available have been severely restricted. The mitered secret dovetail, for instance, is difficult to make, and the simple splined miter has limited strength. Because strength is an important aspect of carcase construction the ideal joint must offer maximum long grain to long grain glue surface.

The fingerjoint spline is actually a joint within a joint. This fact lends the

joint strength equal to or greater than that which is provided through conventional concealed mitered joinery techniques. The technique requires somewhat more work, but it is a device that will enable you to design and build large carcase-type projects that are both strong and attractive.

The fingerjoint spline is intended for use in projects such as cabinets, chests, and contemporary designs, where strength and clean lines are at a premium. It may be used with either solid stock or plywood carcase construction. Do not however use a plywood spline with solid stock carcases, or a solid spline with plywood carcases. In order to equalize whatever movement may occur in the wood, use only plywood with plywood, and solid stock with solid stock.

HONING

You can hone 1132" to 1 (16" from the cutting edge of a blade, but It is rather difficult to hone the whole bevel. Therefore you should hollow grind the blade and then just touch or hone it on your oil or water stone.
