™ Step Table

This attractive Early American Step table is an excellent project for those woodworkers who have a problem obtaining odd-sized stock. The entire piece is made from V* in. thick pine, except for the V* in. thick plywood drawer bottom.

Begin by making the sides (A), shelf (C), and bottom (D), all of which are cut from glued up 1 x 8 and 1 x 10

Description

stock. For the sides, refer to the grid pattern and lay out the step back curve, then use a compass to scribe the IVi in, radius. Use either a band or saber saw for these cutouts and to make the decorative reveal in the stretcher (E). The top (B) is cut from a section of ! x 12, the back (F) from a section of 1 x 10, and the drawer front (G), sides (H), and back (I) are all cut from 1x6 stock.

The rabbets in the sides that accept the shelf and bottom, and the cutouts for the back and stretcher, are all made with the dado-head. Assemble the table using glue and Vn in. dowels where indicated.

To make the drawer, rabbet the front to accept the sides, and the sides to accept the back, as shown in the drawer details. A V* x V* in. rabbet in the front and sides supports the plywood drawer bottom (J).

Position the drawer stop blocks (K) and glue them in place. The 1 in. diameter wood knobs are available in most hardware stores.

For a final finish with an Early American look, we like to apply a coat of Minwax's Golden Oak Stain, followed by two coats of their Antique Oil Finish. W<J
