There are as many styles and types of linenfold carving as there are carvers who practice this traditional technique. T he plainfold carving our slep-bv-step illustrations show is but one style. Two other types are the reverse fold (bottom photo), which is basically just a reverse of the plainlold carving, and the exaggerated V-fold (top photo). Once you are familiar w ith the technique of undercutting to create the illusion of depth, you'll find that it's even easy to come up with your own linenfold carvings, just by studying the way a draped clolh or linen hangs. Just make a pattern, then use the same basic steps as are detailed here lo carve the folds.
