Woodworker's Journal 1993-17-3, страница 6Letters We welcome opinions ami comments (both pro and con) from our readers. Address correspondence to: letters Department. The Woodworker's Journal, P.O. Box 1629. New Milford. CT 06776. I enjoyed reading the article "Green Woodworking with Kids" in your January/February 1993 issue. I agree with Roger Holmes lhal kids and shaving horses seem to pair up like a hand to a well lilted glove. The litile ones can whittle away on a straight-grained stick with a spokeshave, and kids above eight or so will do fine with a drawknife. The feeling of sitting on a horse must have something to do with the attraction. At Country Workshops we have been teaching courses in various types of traditional and "green woodworking" for 15 years. Two years ago we started offering a ihree-day course for 10- to 15-year-olds called "Green Woodworking with Kids." 1 would like to mention one difference of opinion I have regarding safety. 1 disagree with the common idea that sharp tools are safer than dull ones. Maybe so, in certain cases, But I am convinced that really sharp tools are. by far. the most dangerous ones. Really sharp tools will slice through flesh lo the bone with almost no resistance. I will not put such a tool into a child's hands. Tools for kids should be reasonably sharp, so that ihey work well, without loo much effort. Drew7 Langsner, Director Country Workshops, Marshall. N.C. Roger Holmes, author of the article, responds: Over the years. Drew Langsner has introduced many people to the pleasures of green woodworking, and I am excited to hear that he rum' offers workshops for children. I defer to his greater experience in these matters, bin I am concerned the term "reasonably sharp" may be confusing to some. I'm sure Drew would agree lhal all edge tools must be able to cut easily—it is the struggle to make a dull tool work that is most dangerous, for adults and children alike. I'd like to make the Workbench featured in your January/February 1993 issue, but I've been unable lo find the Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) you specify. The people at our local building supply center have never heard of it. Can you tell me where it can be purchased? T.C. Phee. Hanover, Penn, While many building supply centers may not he familiar with MDF, most good lumberyards are. and they should he able to order it for you. If not, the Medite Corporation. P.O. Box 441), Medford. OR 97501: tel. (503) 773-2522 can help. They manufacture MDF and will be happy to provide you (or any of our readers), with the name of their nearest distributor.
