AH the wood (thickncssed to the specified dimensions! you'll need to build ihe heart box in walnut, plus ihe Vis and 1 /k. in. dowel slock, is available in a stock kit from: Heritage Building Specialties 205 N. Cascade, Fergus Falls. MN 56537 Tel. 1-SI Ml-524-4184 Ask for Project-Pak kit No. WJI942. Cost is $8.95 postpaid.

Step-Bv-Step

IWe used walnut for our heart box, since olive wood is something many woodworkers may not have easy access to. Size two 4'/2 in. square pieces, one -Vs in. thick for the lid. a second 1 in. thick for Ihe box. Transfer the full-size pattern to (he lid.

2 With your table saw blade set to 1l\t in. high, establish the -Vi6 in. wide kev notch.

3 Use doublestick tape to hold the lid and box together, then drill a Vs in. diameter by I'/« in. deep hoie through the lid and into the box for the pivot pin.

4 Using a narrow hand saw blade, cut the heart profile. Note thai the lid and box are still joined with the double-stick tape,

5 Using a sharp pencil, or a knife, senbe the notch profile from the lid to ihe bo*.

6Remove the hd. transfer the compartment hole location from the full-size pattern to the box then use a I '/2 in. diameter Forstner bit. in the drill press, to drill the three -74 in. deep compartment holes.

7 Get oul a 2 in. length of 7n in. diameter dowel for the pivot pin, some 1 /k in. dowel stock for ihe locking pins and a piece of in. thick w alnut for the key. Transfer the key profile to the slock, and cul ii out. Don't worry if >ou can't find walnut dowel stock for the pivot pin and locking pin parts A little walnut stain will transform these parts later.

8 Mount the pivot pin in your drill press, turn the drill press on, then hold a file against the pivot pin lo establish a '/n in. deep notch. Be sure lo lock ihe drill press quill so the nolch will be cul al a point 1 /-i in from the pin bottom.

9 Using a '/s in. wide chisel, carefully cul the key pocket. Don'l make the

pKk:kei loo wide. The key must be a snug fit. in the pocket so it won't easily fall out. should the box be turned upside-down. Note that the pocket starts '/tf> in. from the front edge of the box. 1 To assemble ihe box. first drill a pipfp 1 /s in. diameter hole through the back of the box and into ihe pivot pin hole. This locking pin hole should be on center -Vl6 in. dow n from ihe lop edge of the box. Insert the pivot pin and check that the locking pin engages the notch in the pivot pin. preventing the pivot pin from being w ithdrawn, if this tests out properly, place a little glue on the outside end of the locking pin. and insert it into position, with the pivot pin in place. Check that the pivot pin rotates freely, but cannot be withdrawn.

Next, slide the lid down over the pivot pin (tight to the box}, drill a 7s in. diameter hole through the back of the lid and into the pivot pin. add glue and insert ihe lid locking pin. When dry, trim the excess locking pin lengths, final sand the box. and apply a penetrating oil finish. To complete our box. we added a layer of fell io the three compartments and the box bottom. EJj
