Woodworker's Journal 1994-18-2, страница 55the ribbon down into the brad holes, and anchor the ribbon with the brads. Finishing Fine instruments like the psaltery are little gems of woodworking, usually showing off exotic woods, and as such usually look best with a highly polished look and a clear finish, such as lacquer. Use several light coals of lacquer, rather than a single heavy coal, and sand carefully between coats. Note that the bridge and rosette are in place when you apply the finish, but none of the tuning pin holes has yet been drilled. Stringing & Tuning Once your box is built and finished, next up is lay ing oul and drilling the holes for the 48 tuning pins. The pin position is shown in the Stringing & Tuning illus tration. To assist with the hole locations for the lower 24 tuning pins and the brass guide pin holes in the bridge, we've provided a full-size pattern of this section of the psaltery . Drill Vlfi in. diameter by about I in. deep holes for the tuning pins, and insert them. Note that the 24 tuning pins with the notched ends go in the 2-1 holes in the upper portion of the instrument, while the 24 plain pins go in the 24 holes across ihe lower end. Align the 24 upper pins so the notches are all running parallel to the string direction. To mouni the strings, first cut them to approximate length. Next, insert the siring ends through the holes in the notched tuning pins, wrapping the string wire round several times. Now thread the wire through the holes again, bui from the opposite direction and then guide the wire over the top of ihe pin so it fits in the notch. This is difficult to describe, but is shown Clearly in the closeup of the pin in the Stringing & Tuning Detail. Next, as also shown in that detail, pass the wire by the appropriate guide pin, insert the end through the hole in the appropriate bottom tuning pin. and turn ihe pin clockwise to wrap the string around the pin and tension it to achieve the desired lone. Tuning the psaltery usually calls for all the natural notes to be on the right side of the instrument, w ith the sharps and flats on the left side. We've provided the tuning layout, but we recommend that you get the book and tape (see Sources). Play the instrument a single note at a time, using the bow. Of course, rosin up your bow (rosin is included in hardware kit) or it won't work.
