Mount a blank in the lathe. between • centers, and turn it to ,5/ifi in. diameter.

Then, using the parting toot, make a pair of cuts (about >/g in. deep) to establish the 1 in. cap length.

Step 5: With a pencil, mark ihe cen-lerline of the O-ring groove, which is located Vl6 in. from one end. Then, use the skew chisel to create a shallow V-shaped cul al the line. Now, with the V-cut as a guide, use a '/8 in. diameter round file to cui a '/k in. deep groove.

bore them out as shown.

Step II: Stretch an O-ring over the end of the cap and into the groove. Check the cap for a snug fit in the shaker.

Step 12: If all looks okay, remove the O-ring and final sand the shaker and cap through 220-grii. Finish the wooden parts w ith a couple of coals of Preserve Wood Finish (see Sources), a product that is safe for use when in contact with food. Allow ihe finish to dry, then add the O-ring to the cap. g^J

Step 7: After removing the lurning blank from the lathe, use a dovetail saw to trim the ends at the '/4 in. diameter.

Step 8. Remove the remaining nibs w ith a file, then sand the ends smooth.

Step 9: While securing the cap with a handscrew. bore a in. diameter by V-: in. deep hole.
