The hook-like gadget on the bottom corner Iof the April 2008 mystery toolJ was very common years ago and was used to open bottles of one's favorite beverage, generally beer. That is really the only important use for the tool, since after a few beers, one wouldn't use it for much of anything else. Although the woodworker could cut (off) fingers with the three blades, which is probably why grandmother hid the tool in the attic.

kitchen than in grandfather's woodworking shop."

An Early Kitchen Gadget

Now, now, Dave, Wayne Brown of Iafayette, Indiana, said his grandmother actually found this particular mystery tool in the attic and is sure that she's not the one who put it there (although there is some sense in what you say ...)

The answer to our truly mysterious tool from February 2008 finally came, from overseas. Eivind Kristensen of Holmstrand, Norway, says it was for sealing bags of potatoes, using a steel-wire loop folded around the neck of the bag. "The two loop-ends were attached onto the hook, and by holding the handle in one hand, and rotating the unit by the other hand on the middle handle section, the wire loops were tightened to seal the bag."

(We did receive several notes from people suggesting it was a cat/dog carrier idea. A note to all of you: No. Just no.)
