Cutting Edge Technology for Woodworkers In the kitchcn, as is so often the case in the shop, different operators might choosc to use the same tool in different ways. Jake Parker of Henderson, Texas, said, "The wavy blade would be used to crinkle-cut vegetables. The rounded edge opposite the handle would be for chopping vegetables and meat, and the long blade parallel to the handle would be for slicing." The most mysterious part of the tool to our correspondents? The hole in the center. Howard admitted, "The openings in the center of the blade are a bit of a puzzle. Perhaps the hole was simply a means to hang the tool for storage." Ted guessed, "possibly an apple slicer." And Jake speculated, "maybe a wrench of some sorts for another specific kitchen tool." Kenneth Gile of Moody, Maine, however, had the answer: "a perforated key for picking up hot pots." And Reldon Caddy of Olathe, Colorado, had an even more specific answer, with more specific uses for the tool, which he identified as "a stove lid lifter, damper control and wood hatchet. This was used on some wood cookstoves." —Joanna Werch Takes If you have your own woodworking mystery tool (or the answer to this issue's entry) , send it to Stumpers, c/o Woodworker's Journal, BO.
