Outfitting Your Small Shop

By Sandor Nagyszalanczy

Setting up shop can be big fun. How do you do

it and not spend big money at the same time? Benchtop tools may just be the answer.

You've been thinking about getting into woodworking for some time, and now that your stock trading hobby isn't much fun anymore, it's time to clear an area in your garage, shed or barn and start gearing up to make some sawdust! But there's so much equipment in a modern wood-shop, where do you begin? One practical approach is to start with the big stuff and fill in the smaller stuff later: Acquire the power tools first, then buy hand tools, sharpening gear, vises and clamps, etc., little by little as needed or as your budget allows.

Because most neophyte woodworkers start out with small shop spaces, this article will focus on choosing compact benchtop power tools. Although they were once considered underpowered toys, the newest generation of benchtop machines offers excellent performance and capacity at an affordable price tag. Not only are these machines capable of creating some serious sawdust, they're light and small enough to be practical for "convertible" shop spaces that must serve as car garages or garden sheds when they're not used for woodworking.
