Regularly placed holes are really hard to drill freehand. If you try to create shelf-pin holes without a template, you're asking for trouble. Making a template and using a self-centering bit will save you both time and material!

Shelf-pin Hole Template

^^ Drilling holes for adjustable shelf pins can be a hassle: If all the holes aren't spaced and located precisely, you can end up with crooked or wobbly shelves. Instead, a 1/4" self-centering bit, guided by a shelf-pin hole template like the one shown above, helps you get perfectly spaced holes every time. Make the template from a 4" wide piece of 1/2" MDF that's at least four feet long — longer if you're making really tall cabinets.

Similar in its duties and accuracy requirements to the drilling template shown on the next page, this adjustable hinge drilling jig will quickly become one of /our best shop friends.
