Use this Full-size Section View Drawing as a guide for shaping the jewelry box. Have your mirror on hand as you turn your pro|ect to ensure a proper fit.

The lid is now going to be used as a ram chuck so you can reverse-turn the bottom of the base. Press the base into the lid. It should be held very firmly by the lid (see bottom photo, facing page). Use a bowl gouge and a light touch to shape the bottom. It should be concave to prevent rocking. Wrap up by sanding and finishing the bottom.

Shaping the Lid

With the box and lid still pressed together, start shaping the lid so it fits flush with the bottom. This gives you a perfect opportunity

to exactly match the diameter of the box. It's almost like turning the top and bottom from the same piece of wood. Shape the entire outside of the lid using a skew, and then round the top of the lid for a delicate look. Since you'll probably have a few small scratches in the bottom of the box, go back and resand and finish the entire outside of the bottom (see left photo, next page).
