______________ ......... LITTLE GRAY SQUIRREL by Robert J. Hlavacek, Sr. of "Wildlife Intarsia Designs" instructions A word from the designer This easy to make project was cut out of 6mm High-Impact Polystyrene, sheet PVC. This material is virtually unbreakable, weather resistant, easy to cut, available in several colors, and comparable in price to 1/4" thick Plexiglas. Also, it can be glued with cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. Preparation Wrap the PVC with clear package tape on both sides. This is important for a clean cut edge. Apply spray adhesive to the pattern. Place it on the PVC, lining up the base of the squirrel's body and feet with the straight edges of the PVC (see Fig. 1). Drill a 3/16"-Dia. hole for the eyes. Center a piece of scrap PVC on the areas which will have slots cut out and draw an accurate cut line on each side with a sharp pencil (see Fig. 2). Fig. 2. Use a piece of scrap PVC to trace an accurate cut line for the slots. Cut and assemble Use a No. 7 Olson PGT blade with the saw set at a medium or low speed to cut the project. When sawing the joint slots, stay on the inside edge of the line so that the pieces will fit together snugly when assembled. If a slot needs to be enlarged, a 100 grit Super Sander will quickly do the job (see Fig. 3). Push the pieces together for a friction fit. Add a drop of CA glue for a permanent bond if desired Fig. 3. A 100 grit Super Sander makes quick work out of adjusting the fit of the slots. |
