Note: transfer only the lines which you feel are absolutely necessary for your level of painting. A beginning painter may want to transfer all the lines provided, while a more experienced painter may want to only transfer critical lines such as eyes and noses, improvising on other areas such as grasses and feathers. The mallard duck (No. 14) Step 1. Basecoat the beak of the duck with Crocus Yellow, the head with Jubilee Green, and the neck band and under the tail feathers with Seashell White. Step 2. Paint the feet with Bittersweet Orange and the main part of the body with Dresden Flesh. Step 3. Basecoat the speculum feathers with Colonial Blue and the back tail feathers with Dark Burnt Umber. Step 4. Lightly float shade the beak with Jubilee Green and the head with Pthalo Green. Next, float shade the neck and under the tail feathers with Dresden Flesh. Step 5. Float shade the body with Dark Burnt Umber and the speculum feathers with Truly Teal. Step 6. Dot the eye and line the nostril and beak with Black. Highlight the eye in Seashell White. Step 7. Highlight the wings and back tail feathers with a light line of thinned Seashell White. Paint above and below the feathers with Seashell White. Step 8. Paint above the Seashell White areas of the speculum feathers with Black, then highlight the speculum feathers with Aquamarine. Step 9. Very lightly dry brush the body with Green Sea. The land and trees (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) Step 1. Basecoat the land pieces and tree trunks with Autumn Brown. Step 2. Float shade the bottom of the hills, trunks of the trees, and branches with Dark Burnt Umber. Step 3. Stipple the land areas with Deep River Green, then stipple the tops of the branches and land pieces with Crocus Yellow. Step 4. Basecoat the tops of the trees with Green Sea. Step 5. Stipple the trees with Deep River Green, then again with Oasis Green. Stipple the tops of the trees with Crocus Yellow. The water, clouds, and background (Nos. 9, 10,11,12, and 13) Step 1. Basecoat the water pieces with Glacier Blue. Step 2. Float shade the underside of the ripples with Blue Danube. Step 3. Basecoat the clouds with Seashell White, then lightly float shade the underside of the clouds with Crocus Yellow. Step 4. Basecoat the background Blue Danube. Final assembly Referring to the photograph, attach the backboard to the rear of the captured frame. Glue the spacers and overlays in place on the backboard. Hang your mallard in flight and enjoy.
