On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers' first powered aircraft was also the first heavier-than-air machine to sustain powered flight. Just two decades later, on May 20-21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh, flying alone in his small monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, made the first solo non-stop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Not many years after that dramatic feat, the United States was embroiled in a bitter war. The North American P-51 Mustang was then, and still is, considered by many to be the greatest combat aircraft of World War II. Years later, with the world again at peace, aircraft designers produced perhaps the most significant passenger aircraft, the DC-3. The DC-3 made passenger flight accessible to the general public; so much so that before long, bigger and faster aircraft, like the Boeing 747, were being manufactured. Make the plaque Join the Plexiglas to the back side of the wood. Attach the pattern to the center of the wood using spray adhesive and cut around the outside of the pattern. Remove the Plexiglas from the wood and set aside. Using the router and decorative bit, shape the edges of the plaque. Drill blade entry holes and begin cutting. Start from the inside and work outward. Once all cuts have been made, sand until smooth and finish as desired. After the finish has dried, join the Plexiglas to the wooden plaque using the multipurpose adhesive. Attach the hanger and enjoy! For more Carolina Scrollworks patterns, see ad on next page.
