A word from the designer

The "Rock of Ages Lighthouse" is relatively simply to build. It consists of eight hexagonal (six-sided) boxes stacked on top of each other. I used all dimensional lumber for this project (1 x 10's, 1 x 8's, 1 x 6's, and 1 x 4's) to save you from wrestling large pieces of stock through your planer. Incidentally, lumber yards and mills sometimes have end cuts and scraps that they can spare you, especially if you whine enough—unless the employees have already taken them home to use as firewood!

Make the hexagonal boxes

Cut the stock to the sizes indicated and miter the edges to 30 degrees (refer to the Hexagon Layout Drawing as well as the Plan View Drawing). Glue the pieces together using the weather-proof glue; this will also fill

any gaps in the fit. Using No. 4 finishing nails, secure each corner and set each assembly aside to dry.

Once dry, place each box on the appropriate piece of 1/2" plywood and trace around the perimeters. These will be the lids. Cut along the traced lines, then bore a 1"-Dia. hole in the center of each lid for the electric cord. Secure the lids to each box with glue and No. 4 finishing nails. Sand the boxes smooth.

Make the deck pieces

Referring to the Plan View Drawing, cut the three circular deck pieces to shape with the jigsaw. Bore a 1"-Dia. hole in the center of each and sand as necessary.

Bore a series of 3/8"-Dia. holes, spaced equidistant from each other, around the perimeter of each deck piece approx. 1/2" in from the edges. These will receive the guard posts and chain.
