INSTRUCTIONS

Introduction

Donna Fairley Huebsch began painting in 1993, after leaving a 16-year career as a systems engineer with IBM. She lives in Florida with her husband, Jim, the second half of their design/build team. Her designs are currently inspired by her family, which includes a 6-year-old daughter named Kimberly, two dogs, and a guinea pig. For more information about Donna's designs, please visit her website at http://members.aol.com/dfhuebsch.

Cut and sand the wood pieces

Adhere copies of the patterns to the wood pieces with spray adhesive, making sure you align the bottom edge of the tree pattern with the edge of your wood stock. Note: save original patterns or copies of patterns for later use. Make all cuts with the scroll saw. Using the 3/16"-Dia. bit, drill holes all the way through the tree where indicated on the pattern. Remove patterns and sand as necessary. Remove all dust with a tack cloth.

Paint the pieces

Apply wood sealer to all wood surfaces and allow to dry.

the tree Dark Pine, the star and banner edges Emperor's Gold, and the banner front and back surfaces Calico Red. Thin Titanium (Snow) White with water to the consistency of ink. Use an old toothbrush or a spatter brush to spatter the mixture lightly onto your tree. Using a pencil, trace pattern details onto tracing paper. Transfer the traced details to the tree and banner using transfer paper and the stylus. Using the No. 10/0 liner brush, apply Titanium (Snow) White lettering and Emperor's Gold "stitch" lines to the banner. Using the handle end of a small paintbrush, make a "cranberry garland" on the tree by applying dots of Calico Red close together along the pattern lines. Allow paint to dry. Brush two coats of satin varnish onto all the painted pieces.

Finish the pieces

Sand off very small spots of paint where the snowflake sequins will be attached. Apply small dabs of Aleene's Tacky Glue to the sanded spots to glue on the snowflake sequins. Allow to dry. Squeeze small dots of Gold Dust onto the center of each sequin. Note: this paint is very thick. If necessary, shape the paint slightly with the tip of a straight pin until you get the look you want.

Sand off a small spot of paint on the top of the tree and on the underside of the star. Attach the star to the tree using wood glue. When doing this, it is helpful to lay the tree flat on its back and place support underneath the star until the glue dries. Sand off a strip of paint at the bottom front edge of the tree and along the back of the banner. Attach banner to tree using wood glue.

To attach dog biscuits, thread each red ribbon from the back side of the tree through one pair of drilled holes. Tie a bow securing each dog biscuit. Note: if you are attaching dog biscuits to both sides of the tree, thread all ribbons first; then tie on the dog biscuits. Trim off excess ribbon. jir|
