Introduction :i|

Inspired by Native American design, this project depicts a shield attached to a vertical support ;|§ for display. Inside the shield we installed ajm l-7/16"-Dia. wolf mini clock insert. Small wooden' feathers are suspended from the shield with wires ;:pf or sinew.

Adhe're the patterns to the stock with spray«|® adhesive. Note: the upper base pattern is shown-llffvon top of the lower base pattern to indicate if|| proper, placement. Placement of the upright:;:^ 0!';-; assembly, including the location of the mounting'-^*

. Bore blade entry holes 'and make all cut$..Sp| 0§ - Note: to avoid breakage, drill or saw the holes for>'|>;-ie clock insert before cutting the perimeters of -JV |oyj.the pieces. Also, drill the 1/16"-Dia. holes in the llH^hield and in the tops of .the feathers prior to cut- •: Iff - fihg out. these pieces. The bottom center hole ■ .^requires special attention. When the shield is■ glued to the upright, the rear of the hole is not v.-44 accessible. Drill a second hole into the outer ■ §|Pf edge of the shield to allow the hanger to exit through the bottom (see Illustration 1 on pattern . section). You may notice in the photograph a jffti §sp::couple of extra holes in the shield. Disregard . ^ ^pp-them, as I was going to add two more feathers |f|§ jjni&ut thought that five looked best after all. flp^ Remove patterns, and touch up any imperfec-|||| tions with needle files, sandpaper, etc. Check:4% the clock insert fit and adjust as needed. Note: |f Wm'- you want to do this prior to gluing the sections';-^ | together.

•H. Gte the upper base section on the lower ba$e;f|§ $•;' section where indicated on the pattern. To com-^ pi, plete the upright assembly, glue the rear support |y. to the center of the back of the upright, making § sure the bottom edges are flush. Before attach-H ing the upright assembly to the base, use a small square to make sure the upright stands perfectly vertical. Make.adjustments as needed, then |||| 4 glue the upright assembly to the base. For >ff 4 added protection, secure the wood screw into ; 4 the bottom of the base and through the upright t;-'44:, Next, glue the overlay to the shield, then the;||i %4 shield to the upright. When all glue has dried, 4 apply finish of choice (we used Wotco natura||||| 4 Danish oil). i

Thread wire or sinew (we used small pieces of 4' wire Christmas ornament hangers) through the 4: tops of the feathers, then through the holes in the ;i|| 4" shield. Insert clock movement and enjoy! '';.:';-. You may also want to experiment with pa rs 4;_ stains, etc. Just remember to do your "experi-i^M Jjf mooring" or scrap. wood, -
