INSTRUCTIONS

Make the wall assembly

- Begin by selecting and sizing your wood to the proper thickness, widths, and lengths. Make the walls first. Saw the front/rear and side walls to shape. Cut out the oval : window and feed hole in the front and rear walls. Drill a 1/2"-Dia. hole in the front wail piece and cut out the roof ; lock key slot as indicated (so that it looks like a keyhole). Bore a l/2"-Dia hole 5/16" deep on the rear wail piece (on the same center); this hole will support the end of the roof lock dowel.

Referring to the pattern, miter the edges of the walls. ; Using water resistant yellow glue, assemble the walls. Hint: use heavy duty rubber bands to clamp the four walls /together while the glue dries.

Make the roof assembly

Cut the miters on the two roof pieces, as indicated on the pattern. Glue both roof halves together and let dry. Cut . out the roof gussets and bore the 1/2"-Dia. holes as shown. ; Again cut out the key slot as indicated on what will be the ; front gusset. Measure 2-1/16" from each end of the roof assembly and glue the gussets in place (see the Roof : Assembly Drawing). Cut the lock knob to shape.

Make the base assembly

Cut the platform board to size and drill four l/8"-dia. holes approximately 2" from each corner; these will be drain holes for rain or snow.

Make the rails. First miter each end, as shown, so that they are the correct length. Then rout out a 1 /2" wide by

5/16" deep dodo centered on the inner surface of each rail. Assemble the rails onto the platform, applying glue.: only to the mifered ends of the rails. Note: DO NOT put any glue into the dado slots, the platform must be free to expand and contract with different weather conditions. Finally, cut out the feed ramp as indicated by the Feed Ramp Detail drawing and glue it centered on the platform.

Final assembly

Glue the Plexjglas windows to the inside of the front/rear walls with Super glue.

Apply water resistant glue to the sides of the feed ramp, then slip the wall assembly over it. Let the glue dry completely before moving to the next step.

Fabricate the roof lock. Referring to the Roof Lock Detail Drawing, drill a l/2"-Dia. hole 5/16" deep into the. rear of the lock knob. Next, drill a l/8"-Dia. hole 1/4" deep into the dowel 1-1/8" from one end. Put a drop of Super Glue info the l/8"-Dia. hole and insert the brass pin.

Glue the brass pin end of the dowel into the hole in the lock knob. Before the glue sets up, align the brass pin so that it points to the one o'clock position as viewed from the face side of the lock knob.

Finishing

To finish your feeder, apply a coat of clear exterior outdoor oil to the outer surfaces of the feeder. Do not apply any finish to the inside of the feeder, the smell of the finish may transfer to the bird feed.

Your feeder may be hung from a tree or mounted on a post, the choice is yours. Happy bird watching! vj
