Introduction

I was waiting at a railroad crossing sometime ago, ik while a particularly long train was going by. No, I wasn't trying to memorize the numbers on the side | of the cars, I already tried that once and ended up |.in the nervous hospital for the weekend. What caught my attention this time was all the graffiti painted on the railroad cars. I don't know what it is like where you are, but around here train car graffiti seems to be the "art form" of choice for a lot of people with spray cans and too much time on their hands. Maybe if the railroad companies painted graffiti pn their cars to begin with the graffiti "artist" would paint them solid colors.

Well anyway, I caught sight of old Kilroy that day. Kilroy is a graffiti character I remember from the 60's— | and that's about as much as I remember from the 60's. ;if you stare at those cars 'flashing by long enough, you're bound to get some kind of inspiration, so by the time I got home I had decided to make a Kilroy Intarsia project. This ' clock is my tribute to ol' Kilroy—Kilroy Keepin' Time.

INSTRUCTIONS

I have heard a lot of people complain about how hard it is to get all the different woods used in most intarsia projects. For those people, this project will be a snap! All you need is three feet of 1 x 8 pine or spruce.

The pieces are all stained the different colors. You don't have to buy a lot of expensive paint either. I just used different paints I had around the shop.

To start with it's a regular intarsia project

Trace the pattern on the wood, with whichever technique you like. I prefer to make a template and trace the pieces onto the wood. Cut out the pieces, make sure your scroll saw blade is square to the table (see Fig. 1). Use a good blade like a No. 7 or No. 9 P/S or DT/R. You could also use a band saw with a 1/8" (14-15 TPI) blade. Note: you don't cut out the clock face, the clock face is simply the back board.

The sneakers

The spots on the shoes marked 3/4 should be drilled 3/4"-Dia x 3/8" deep. Round each end of the 3/4"-Dia. x 1" doweling and cut to length to fit the two holes. The shoelace holes are 1 /8"-Dia. x 1 /4" deep, bore them as indicated.
