Step 5. Drill blade entry holes with a 1/16"-Dia. drill bit. Drill in increments if the wood is more than 1/4" thick. If you drill thick wood in one pass, the gullets fill with compacted sawdust and the drill bit has a far greater tendency to run out. That is not a problem r you are in a large piece of waste area, but you will ruin the eyes on this design if it happens. Step 8. We sand the surface up to 320-grit for an oil finish and apply at least three coats of Watco Natural Danish Oil. Apply a liberal coat on the first finish, making sure to saturate the end grain of the entire design. Allow it to soak in and- re-apply it to the areas that appear dry. Once you have all the grain coated, wipe it off with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Hang it up and check it several times during the day and wipe off any bleed out. Two or three days later, do it all over again, but this time use a dry disposable brush to remove any surface accumulations within the cutouts, and wipe the surface with a clean cloth. Allow about a week before you apply a light coat to the surface. If you want a glossier surface, rub it in with 500-grit wet or dry sandpaper and polish it with a clean dry cloth. I know it seems like a lot of work when you could just give it a spray coat of poly or lacquer, but this finish has a much richer appearance and is well worth your effort. II ■ Step 11.
