Adjustable miter box and backsaw combinations are expensive so you may want to start by purchasing a simple hardwood miter box at the local hardware store. This will serve well enough for making both square and 45 degree cuts and by the time you've worn it out you'll be skillful enough to make your own. When making miter cuts of other than 45 degrees, it helps to clamp a straight strip of scrap on the workpiece along the cutting line, to act as a guide fence for the sawblade to bear against. Whether or not your joint will fit together perfectly depends on the care with which the two parts are cut so it's best to employ some means of guiding the sawblade and keeping it perpendicular to the workpiece. After making the cuts for a true miter, check your accuracy by holding the joint together against a framing square as shown in Fig. 5A. You'll easily see if any slight adjustments are needed for a perfect joint. Other miter cuts can be checked by setting the stock of the bevel square against the workpiece and noting if the cut edge is parallel to the blade (Fig. 5B).
