perpendicular to the workpiece. A slot with a depth of at least Vi inch into each member provides for a 1 inch wide spline. This will provide ample reinforcement for small assemblies. Large assemblies require wider splines. The procedure for fitting feathered or through splines are the same for joints of less or more than 90 degrees.

True edge miters are generally splined as shown in Fig. 11B. In this case, the spline width is limited by the thickness of the stock being joined. To lay out the spline slots, first make sure that the joint comes together at the proper angle, then clamp it in the bench vise and scribe for the slots with a combination square as shown Fig. 12.

When using hand tools, the spline slot should be cut no closer than Vs inch from the inside corner of the joint to avoid chipping along the edge. With ³A inch stock, spline slots are best kept to a width of no more than Vs inch. Again, cut within the waste lines and remove waste with a small chisel or file.
