able protractor is very handy for this though, in reality, many woodworkers simply "eyeball" the slot layout.

Splined edge miters are usually used in box construction or to form polygon columns. If the joints fit together well and the splines are reasonably snug in their slots, the parts can be glued and fitted together to form two halves, then the halves can be fitted together dry. If all looks well, you can proceed to glue the halves to

gether and clamp the assembly. Webbed belt clamps are ideal for this job but a couple of lengths of rope twisted tight with sticks will suffice.

Edge miter joints can also be feathered and this technique is sometimes used for a decorative effect if splines of a contrasting wood are used. This is another situation where the joint can be glued together first, then clamped in the bench vise while narrow slots are laid out and cut. Normally, the slots should be cut so that the splines reach almost to the inside corner of the joint as shown in the small detail of Fig. 14.

Cutting and splining good clean miter joints with nand tools is a challenging yet very satisfying form of woodworking. The task becomes easier and quicker with the use of a tablesaw ana router but very accurate machine set-up is still required.
