Give all parts a thorough final sanding with 220 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. Any areas of glue squeeze-out should be cleaned out with a sharp chisel. Take particular care to sand any rough areas within the cove cut. Any sharp edges should be rounded over slightly. Of course, the type of final finish is a matter of personal preference. We chose to stain ours with Minwax's Golden Oak Stain, applying one coat. A small foam brush makes for easy application of the stain, although a rag can also be used with good results. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly. For a clear final finish we applied two coats of polyurethane varnish, sanding lightly between coats.
