length and width. The drawer front, if flush, should be cut to fit in the opening with very little clearance at the ends and along the top. If the case and drawer fronts are to be painted, it's best to allow about 1/16 inch clearance; otherwise allow 3/32 inch. For a lipped front, cut the rabbet to form the lip before fitting to the opening

3. Cut the side to front joints, then cut the joints to fasten the back to the sides. When cutting the back to length, some craftsmen deduct about 1/16 inch from the finish length s-: when the drawer is assembled, tx back end is very slightly narrower thaa the front. This helps to insure that tfce drawer will slide smoothly.

4. The front and sides are groc.ec to receive the bottom. The groovy should be cut at least V* inch up frc-the bottom edges and should be size-to take the bottom with a slip fit. The bottom is never glued into these grooves. Highest quality drawers will have the backs grooved also so aU edges of the bottom are held.

5. Utility and medium quality drawers are assembled by gluing the sides to the front. The back is then added and the bottom is slipped into place under the back. A bit of wax on the bottom edge will help ease it into the grooves and prevent glue from sticking at the joints.

Clamp the assembly where necessary, and check carefully to make sure that the assembly remains fiat and square (allowing for a slight front-to-back taper). Utility drawers should have rabbeted side-front joints reinforced with nails, screws or dowel pins added after the glue cures. Fasten bottoms to the back with a few box nails

For high quality dovetailed drawers, assemble the front to the sides, then add the bottom and back. With machine-cut dovetail joints, it should not be necessary to clamp up the assembly but it should be carefully checked for squareness and flatness. If the drawer sides need to be routed for side hung guides, this is more conveniently done before assembly.

6. Cleats for side hung drawers are added. If the drawer is to have a center guide runner, glue it to the underside, perfectly square to the front. If the drawer back is grooved to hold the bottom, it must be notched to clear the guide strip mounted in the case. Many craftsmen take the time to round off the upper edges of the sides and back which improves the appearance of the drawer.
