Apparent symmetry is exhibited by almost every living thing. For better or for worse, we perpetuate this phenomenon in the works we create. Often, we cast off potentially beautiful materials because this symmetry isn't immediately apparent.

By taking boards with tight knots and resawing them, the beauty hidden within can be harvested in a project such as cabinet doors which are an ideal medium for displaying symmetrical grain patterns.

Care must be taken in the selection of the boards with knots and other grain figures used in creating the overall design. Boards with many large round knots can produce panels which, with a bit of imagination, display interesting shapes or faces; some whimsical, and some quite ferocious. The delicate look of a single elongated knot is one of my favorites .

The door frames are made up in the usual way, with mortise and tenon joints (Fig. 1). After gluing up the frame, the sharp edges are eased with sandpaper, A router with a 3/» in. rabbeting bit is then used to run a rabbet

around the frame face to receive the panel. When working with frame stock of about 3A in. thickness, I cut the rabbet Vi in. deep. The router leaves the corners of the rabbet with a radius so I use a square to mark the corners and chop them square with a chisel and mallet (Fig. 2).
