The splines, which will join the slats, are now prepared. Normally, for strength, we use cross grain or plywood splines but in this case, strength is not important. The splines serve to connect and align the slats and stop light from showing through. Cut with the grain running lengthwise, they will expand and contract with the entire panel (Fig. 4). Spline lengths should be about '/j in. longer than the slats and their thickness should allow for a good fit in the grooves. Cut the splines so that their width is just slightly less than V» in, , which is the combined depth of the grooves in two joining slats. Sand all the slats, and after laying them out in proper order, run a bead of glue into each spline groove and insert the splines. Try to avoid using so much glue that it runs out of the grooves. It's not necessary to apply giue to the edges of the slats.
