it passes the saw 's column, real throat capacity is typically slightly less than the w heel diameter.

If the frame of a two wheel hand saw is like a regular C-elamp. the frame of a three w heel saw is like an extra deep tie-lamp The use of a third wheel allows throat capacity lo be increased beyond the diameter of the

saw's wheels (Photo -t). However, keep in mind that the leverage created by locating wheels in this arrangement increases stress on the frame of the saw.

I he Tracking Dilemma

Except for the guides, a band saw's wheels and tires require more attention than any other pan of the saw. Here, we'll look at the common causes of tracking problems and the best solutions.

PROBLEM #1: Out of Balance Wheels

Wheels that are just a little out of balance can cause tracking problems. Using a band saw with unbalanced w heels is like driving a car with unbalanced tires. And. Ihe resulting v ibration produces ragged cuts.

SOLUTION:

To check band saw wheels for balance, remove the blade, give the wheel a spin, let it stop, and mark the part of the wheel that ends up at the bottom. If. after a few tries, the same pan of the wheel always ends up ai the bottom, then that's the heavy part of the wheel. On older saws, with heavy -duty construction, one way to balance a wheel was to remove metal from the heavy part bv drilling shallow (not through) holes inside the rim (Photo 5). However, with modern lighter-design saws, a better concept might be to add weight, as with balancing a car's w heel. This can be done by crimping lead weights onto the wheel, or even by simply wrapping a little copper w ire around an available spoke, until the wheel is balanced.

PROBLEM #2: Out-of-Round and Unbalanced Drive Assemblies

Oul of round and unbalanced drive pulleys, shafts and belts can cause vibration. The philosophy "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not apply to drive assemblies. A drive bell that isn't broken may still need living.

SOLUTION:

Worn or delaminaling belts should be replaced, as should bent
