Improved Crisscross Joint

The crisscross corner joint that Dick Ayers presented in the April 2009 issue ['Tricks of the Trade"] can be made almost unbreakable by drilling down vertically through the leg at the intersection of the tenon extensions and inserting some kind of pin — a dowel or a metal rod. A long deck screw could also be used with appropriate clearance and shank hole diameters in the various members. Extend the hole and pin into the leg beyond the tenon extensions for maximum strength.
