offer the best stability for this operation. Feed the drawers counterclockwise over the bit to make the cuts. Chisel the corners square, and you're ready to glue the plywood bottoms into place.

My husband Mike turned a pair of cherry drawer knobs (pieces 7) with short tenons for me. I drilled stopped holes in the drawer faces for the tenons and glued the knobs in place. I chose to center the knobs on the drawer widths but offset them just 1" down from the tops. It adds to the eclectic character of this piece.

Several careful passes with a handheld router and rabbeting bit created the bottom panel rabbet in the chest. Then the author turned to her sharp corner chisel to complete the job.

Constructing the Drawer Housing

There are lots of ways to hang drawers, but I wanted to keep things simple here. The drawers just slide into a "till" style drawer housing that nails into position inside the chest. No spacers, runners or finicky slides to deal with on this project.

Make the housing bottom (piece 8) from 3/4" cabinet-grade plywood (I used cherry ply), following the Material List dimensions. Check the overall size of the bottom panel by slipping it behind the drawer open

ings in the chest. It should slide into place with a slight friction fit but not tightly.

You'll see in the Drawings on the previous page that the drawer dividers (pieces 9) install into shallow dadoes in the bottom panel. Set up a dado blade on your table saw to match the thickness of your divider plywood, and make a test cut on scrap to check the fit. Then use the drawers as references for setting the position of the divider dadoes. The dividers must be spaced far enough apart to give the drawers a bit of left-to-right clearspace for free movement, but you don't want the drawers to fit sloppily in their openings.

It's also important that the center divider lines up accurately between the drawer openings in the chest. Be sure to double-check that placement carefully. When you're confident about the divider spacing and locations, plow the two 3/16M-deep dadoes.

Now rip and crosscut the drawer dividers to size. Use the Material List dimensions as a guide, but be sure to verify their width against the actual height of your drawers. The dividers, seated in their
