Step 4. Float shade Dark Burnt Umber on the inside of the mouth, around the eye, and on the fins and tail close to the body. Dry brush Dark Burnt Umber lightly on the upper part of the Coral "stripe" and over the eye.

Step 5. Using the wooden end of a paintbrush or a stylus, add dip dots of Blue Spruce on the body, fins and tail. Float Coral on the inside of the mouth. Place a float of Ivory on the back and upper fins of the fish for "shine" lines. Make a small Ivory dot in the upper left area of the pupil of the eye to suggest depth.

Use a wash of Leaf Green to paint in the plants. Float shade Blue Spruce around the edges of the plants. Float shade Blue Spruce under the waves where the three sunfish go as well. Dry brush Trail Tan on the rocks. Next, dry brush Brown Iron Oxide on the rocks. Finally, float shade Brown Iron Oxide behind the rocks.

Focus on dry brushing

The term "dry brushing" is used to describe a technique which results in a soft application ol color, built in layers to achieve depth and opacity (depth of color). The key point to remember is that it is almost impossible to add too little color, as you can always build more color on top of what you have, but it is very easy to add too much color, and once it is dry, it is difficult to remove.

As the name implies, dry brushing is just that—application of very little paint without the use of water. The goal here is to apply just a hint of color, gradually building the intensity. The preferred paintbrush to use for dry brushing is the deerfoot stippler brush, which gets its name from the fact that its round shape and flat bottom resemble the hoof of a deer. Deerfoot stippler brushes come in many sizes ranging from 1/8" in diameter to as large as 1" in diameter, or larger. For our purposes, we will use a 1/4" diameter brush.

When you are ready to apply color with the deerfoot stippler, be sure that the brush is clean and dry. If you have used a color in it before, thoroughly rinse the paint from the brush and vigorously blot the brush on some clean paper towels, being sure to remove as much moisture as possible from the brush.

With the clean brush, dip the tip only in the color of paint you are using. Immediately scrub the excess paint onto a clean, dry, folded paper towel to remove most of the color. The brush should be almost dry to the touch. Move to your workpiece and begin to apply the color using a gentle tapping and swirling motion. The color should be very light on your work-piece—not streaky or spotty. If you notice streaks or spots of concentrated color, remove more paint from your brush by once again scrubbing it into the paper towel, then try again. You need to remember to be patient and to let the color build slowly by remaining in the same area as you work. This allows a great deal of control on your part as to how much color you wish to apply to achieve the effect you want. Dry brushing can be very therapeutic. As a rule of thumb, dry brushing is mainly used as a highlighting process, with the greatest intensity of color in the middle or center of the object being painted. There | are, however, exceptions to this rule, as with most painting | techniques. |

Practice dry brushing on scraps of wood and soon you will | master this technique and will be adding highlights here and | there to all of your projects! If you have any questions about | the dry brushing technique or any painting questions in gener- £ al, feel free to contact me at 17713 S. 66,h Court, Tinley Park, § IL 60477, (708) 532-5624, or email scrollgirl@aol.com, and I | will attempt to answer them for you. |
