Contouring

Refer to the Typical Contours Drawing as well as the photo of the finished project.

In preparation to contouring, cut and glue shims of appropriate thickness to the backs of the pieces indicated on the pattern. Also, resaw the pieces as marked by the amount indicated (see Fig. 12). Tape the pieces of the eye together and contour the entire unit as shown in Fig. 13, then sand the eyeball down a little more, below the eyelid.

Contour the lowest pieces of the design first with the appropriate size drum as shown in Fig. 14. Smooth out the ridges left by the drum with the flutter wheel as shown in Fig. 15.

Gluing

Place wax paper on a flat surface and edge glue the pieces of the face and neck together, excluding the eyeball and goatee (see Fig. 16).

Finishing

Mask the backer where the head will be glued, the back of the goatee, and the lower edge of the head where the goatee will be glued. Spray several coats of matte finish on the project. Sand lightly with 320 grit paper and spray on another coat (see Fig. 17).

Remove the masking tape from all pieces and glue the goatee in place with 5-minute epoxy as shown in Fig. 18.

Glue the head to the neck unit with carpenter's glue using a few small C-clamps with protective shims to insure a good bond (see Fig. 19).

Apply several coats of gloss varnish on the eyeball. When dry, glue it in place. Attach a hanger to the back to complete. Sr|
