When the arm hangs down naturally, it bends at the elbow. Step 10. Now begin shaping the coat and trousers. Make the button line down the coat curved. In fact, avoid straight lines throughout the carving. Give the man a rumpled look. Step 11, Carve the back of the coat and the collar. Step 15. A crooked stick serves as the walking stick. Fit the top of the stick to the hollow of the hand. A spot of glue holds it in place. Also for strength, anchor the stick against the toe. Step 16. Attach the carving to the base with dowels in the heels. Step 17. The finished carving ready to be painted. Step 3. Carve a 90 degree angle into the front of the face with the nose at the tip of the 90 degree angle. Begin shaping the bottom of the chin. Step 4. Carve in the profile of the face, then block in the ears and begin shaping the back of the head and the chin line. Step 5. Carve away wood at the sides of the nose to begin shaping it. A deep gouge, such as the No. 11-4mm palm tool, lets you make a single pass alongside the nose to create a smooth transition from the side of the nose to the cheek. |
