Step 1. Trace the pattern onto the wood. Using the band saw, saw out both the front and side views.

to fit the head. I carve the hat first in order to thin the brim to clear the wood for carving the face. The eyes are tucked under the brim of the hat, so wood must be carved away from the lower brim next to the head to accommodate them.
