Insert the doweSs

Cut the dowels to a 4-5/8" length. Mark one end of each dowel at 1/4" for the "feet" (see Fig. 5). Gently round over both ends of the dowels for easier insertion (see Fig. 6). Apply a small amount of glue inside the holes in the bottom layers (3 and 4) and pound the dowels through. They should protrude 1/4", just far enough so that the markings are visible (see Fig. 7). The candleholder should sit evenly on the bench top. As you are driving the dowels, be alert for any splitting and if you begin to see some cracking, apply a small amount of glue inside the crack, clamp together with a bar clamp and continue pounding. Wipe away the glue from the "feet" area and let dry.

Final assembly and finishing

Cover the brass panels with a layer of packing tape to prevent them from getting any finish on them (see Fig. 8). Insert the brass panels into the 1/4"-Dia. holes and temporarily hold them in place with masking tape. Make sure that the panels are facing the correct direction. Place the upper layers (1 and 2) over the dowels and pound in place, matching the grain direction of the bottom layers. Keep pounding until all sides are even. Apply Danish oil, followed by wax or polyurethane. Once the finish has been applied, remove all protective coating from the brass panels.

Make the oak rings

Transfer the ring patterns to the wood and cut the four individual layers to shape. Mark the drill centers on layer 3 with an awl (see Fig. 2). Stack layers 2 and 3 together, aligning the center hole and making sure that the grain directions match. Secure with double-sided tape. Bore the holes to receive the dowels and brass panels in both pieces as indicated on the pattern. Next, stack layer 3 on top of layer 4 (with layer 3 centered on layer 4). Secure them with double-sided tape and bore through the already drilled 3/8"-Dia. holes in layer 3 (see Fig. 3). Note: do not bore the 1/4"-Dia. holes into layer 4.

Round over the top outside edge of all four layers (see Fig. 4). Stack layer 1 on top of layer 2 and layer 3 on top of layer 4 and glue in place. Be sure to match up the grain direction of the two layers. Using the dowel holes of layer 2 as reference, bore through into layer 1 approximately 3/16" (the depth is not critical here, just make sure you do not drill all the way through).
