SUPPLIES

Wood; basswood or butternut—one piece 3" x 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"

Tools: band saw; carving knife; small palm handled

veiner Black paint Assorted brushes Wood sealer Walnut stain Soft cloth

Clear oil finish of choice

INSTRUCTIONS

When I was a kid, we had a dog that seemed to be lying down more than it was standing up. Occasionally, it would lift its head to check things out before settling back down. This carving captures that pup in one of its more active moments.

Step 1. Lay the carving out so that the grain goes the long way on the figure. That way, the protruding leg will be strong. The only fragile part, then, will be the ears, and since they are small, it is easier to keep from breaking them off. Band saw around the pattern. Note: I do not saw out the top view. I prefer to block it out with the carving tools, which allows me to make adjustments along the way.
